How to Immediately Eliminate the Clutter in Your Life

Have you ever started a project at home which led to another project and then another? Before you knew it, you had an endless sea of home projects all going on at once.

Why am I telling you all this?

Because that’s been my summer. We’ve been involved in doing many, many projects at home from painting, removing flooring, and redecorating rooms. In fact, we even made our way into the garage. A few days ago, I was organizing my garage and deciding what am I was going to drag out to the street to get rid of and what I was going to keep.

I had made a big pile of stuff that I was having a hard time getting rid of. I told my wife,”Well I think I might wanna keep that because.. what if, you know, one day…?”

She said something to me that was so incredibly profound in that moment. She said, “I’d like for us to just eliminate the what-ifs and the one-days.

That solved it right there. That made the process so much easier. If you find yourself in your life or in your work, held down with clutter, I’d like to offer the same advice to you.

Maybe it’s time to eliminate the “what-ifs” and the “one-days.”

Eliminate the “what-ifs”

We oftentimes will go through our day or go through our home and we’ll hold onto stuff. What are you holding onto today? Are you holding onto something mentally that you need to just let go because it’s a “what-if”?

Are you holding onto something in your house that’s cluttering up your garage, cluttering up a room or it’s just an eyesore because maybe someday you might need it? If you allow yourself to just listen to the “what-ifs”, you will accumulate clutter in your life. You’ve got to be willing to eliminate the what-ifs.

Eliminate the “one-days”

I want to keep and hold onto this because “one day”, I may

  • Renovate the kitchen
  • Get that job that I’ve been always waiting for
  • Finally decide to do that backyard project
  • Choose to launch that business

Clutter just comes into our life. If you want to immediately eliminate the clutter in your life, then let my wife’s words speak into your life today. I’d like for you to just eliminate the what-ifs and the one-days.

    1. I just cleaned out my garage last week…we’ll have to compare photos! 🙂 My wife gave me similar advice years ago when I was hesitating taking action because of unknown fears. She said “You can “what-if forever!” Basically saying “take action despite your fears of the negative possible outcomes.”

    2. Love this! And it can be applied to so many aspects in life. I’ve been downsizing for a while but on March 1st I got so tired of all the stuff I started a major clean-out. I l definitely used the “one day” philosophy keeping things like furniture, garden stuff etc. for when I may get a house again (moved to a condo years ago). It feels amazing to reclaim all that space. Earlier this week I challenged my readers with a Get Rid of 3 Things a Day Challenge so decluttering is definitely in the air!
